I struggled to match Nina’s breathing, both shallower and deeper than mine. Short sharp breaths in, slow phlegmy breaths out. She developed a hitch in her exhalations; I course-corrected to stay in lockstep. Her breath quickened. Was she waking up, even trying to match her breathing to mine? Nina’s breath slowed again. Then stopped.
