"Pull it!" she squealed, eyes gleaming.

"It's not quite ready," he said, smiling. "When it's finished, if
you're good, I'll let you pull the rope the first time."

"What's it for?" Her fingers traced the wood; a splinter set her
bawling and spared him from her question.

The prototype guillotine, unfinished, stood in quiet wait.
