Defense Mechanism of the Bombardier Beetle, Dramatization of a True Story

by Marielle Newsome

Charles Darwin is walking through the woods one day, with a beetle in each hand. He spots a third one, and not wanting to let the others go, he pops one into his mouth.

Suddenly, his mouth feels like burning.

"Euchhh!" He spits the beetle out.

And that is how the bombardier beetle is discovered.

Poor Charlie. Toads never quite tasted the same after that.
