A special treat for y'all today. It's like the Criterion Collection version of this story, with three alternate endings! I like each of them equally, like one might say about one's children, who are all equally a little disappointing. Enjoy.
Shemekwa bummed a cigarette off me after work.
"A funeral's, like, an hour, right Mr. Lopez? My boyfriend's picking me up, he should've called if his cousin's funeral ran late."
"Want a ride?"
She bent one knee forward, one back, and pouted, but her eyes were blanks. I lent her bus money and drove home.
Shemekwa bummed a cigarette off me after work.

"In your Jag?" Her right hand went to her hip, her left to her hair.
I laughed, lent her bus money, and drove home.

"I didn't mean..." I started.
"Do," she interrupted, "you have just bus money?"
